The Most Messed Up Moments of Maven Calore

Marrying Iris
We already know that most Silvers in Norta get married for power rather than love, so Maven makes the admittedly smart political move of allying himself with the Lakelands by marrying their princess, Iris. We don’t know too much about Iris yet, but there’s no way that poor girl deserves to be shackled to Maven until death do they part. But on the other hand, this marriage does give Evangaline a bit of freedom, so we’ll call this an almost saintly move for bringing her one step closer to being with Elane! (Sorry, Iris)

The King’s Cage bathtub scene
It’s hard to explain why this scene freaks us out so much… BUT IT DOES. Maven’s acting vulnerable and pouring out his feelings for Mare, so we almost feel bad for him, but he’s also still torturing Mare and maybe she should’ve seized the opportunity to attack him?! Ahh, it’s all just so freaking tense! And just like Mare, it appears our scale is conflicted about how to react to this entire situation.

Imprisoning Silvers and newbloods
Maven and his mother, Elara, are keeping Corros Prison well-stocked with both newbloods and Silver dissenters, which is obviously horrible. And if Mare and crew didn’t break into the prison and free everyone at the end of GLASS SWORD, this would definitely rank higher on the list! What does it say that literal imprisonment is such a casual thing he did?

His “Until we meet again” notes
There’s honestly nothing that embodies the creepy smile face more than the notes that Maven leaves for Mare every time he finds a newblood before she does.

Holding Mare captive
We’ll always remember exactly where we were the first time we read the final two words of GLASS SWORD: “I kneel.” Ahhhhh! And then to have to endure the first section of KING’S CAGE, with Mare as Maven’s prisoner, shackled by Silent Stone and wasting away?! She better Rise, Red as the Dawn and get her revenge in WAR STORM!

The betrayal
It’s been four years and the ending of RED QUEEN still has us shook. No wonder Mare still pines for the good version of Maven that she first met. It’s just too horrible to think that he can idly stand by as Cal is forced to kill their own father. But Elara’s manipulations run too deep and Maven even sentences Cal and Mare to a death that they just barely escape from. Safe to say, Maven is permanently at the devillish villain level here.

Branding Mare
The “M” brand that Maven leaves on mare is the best motivation he could ever give her to take him down, because there’s no scale big enough to show how messed up—and just plain twisted it is. Maven, you better watch your back.
Can Maven be redeemed, or will he finally meet the end he deserves? Tell us your final WAR STORM theories in the comments below!
