Everything We Know About ‘Love in Taipei’, the ‘Loveboat, Taipei’ Movie

Pack your bags, everyone! Loveboat, Taipei, the instant New York Times bestseller that was author Abigail Hing Wen’s debut, is being adapted into a movie called Love in Taipei, which means that it’s time for us to take a trip to Taiwan! Okay, fine, maybe we all have responsibilities so can’t actually just up and go, but wouldn’t that be amazing?! At least we can celebrate. ACE Entertainment—the company behind To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and Irreplaceable You—and 1 Productions Film Co. are the ones adapting Loveboat into a movie! To say we’re excited is a vast understatement; just take it from the author herself.

So this happened. 🤣🤣🤣 I am beyond thrilled to be working with ACE Entertainment, producers of @jennyhan's To All the Boys I've Loved Before to bring #LoveboatTaipei to the big screen. Thank you to all for being on this journey with me! https://t.co/TsfBPxY9Hr

Loveboat, Taipei introduces us to 18-year-old Ever Wong, who is sent by her parents to Taiwan to study Mandarin the summer before she’s supposed to begin med school in the fall.

But Chien Tan, nicknamed Loveboat by its students, is nothing like Ever expected. She enters a world filled with nightlife, snake-blood sake, and even love. This summer, Ever is determined to break all the rules she’s lived by her whole life, and it’ll be one she’ll never forget. We can guarantee you’ll fall in love with the entire cast—because, yes, Team Epic Reads is still debating between #TeamRick and #TeamXavier.

If Crazy Rich Asians made you fall in love with Singapore, then Loveboat, Taipei is sure to make you fall for the rich culture and glamour that Taiwan has to offer.

The Cast

  • Ashley Liao plays Ever, our main character who is begrudgingly shipped off to Taipei for the summer by her parents to study Mandarin. Or so she thinks. She ends up learning a whole lot more about life—and love—than she bargained for in one crazy summer.
  • Ross Butler plays Rick, the bane of Ever’s existence. Referred to by Ever as ‘Boy Wonder’, Rick is the perfect, prodigious teen all the parents love. Only, he has some secrets of his own that are about to come to light this summer.
  • Nico Hiraga plays Xavier, the bad boy artist who’s dating Sophie at the beginning of summer, but can’t seem take his eyes off Ever…which will make Sophie very unhappy.
  • Chelsea Zhang plays Sophie, the charismatic, fashionable and ultra-competent It girl who has a bone or two to pick with Ever. The two girls have a lot to learn from each other. But could they also become, unexpectedly, friends?

Quick hits for ‘Loveboat, Taipei’

About Loveboat, Taipei

Praised as “an intense rush of rebellion and romance” by #1 New York Times bestselling author Stephanie Garber, this romantic and layered debut from Abigail Hing Wen is “a roller-coaster ride of romance and self-discovery.” (Kirkus)

“Our cousins have done this program,” Sophie whispers. “Best kept secret. Zero supervision.

And just like that, Ever Wong’s summer takes an unexpected turn. Gone is Chien Tan, the strict educational program in Taiwan that Ever was expecting. In its place, she finds Loveboat: a summer-long free-for-all where hookups abound, adults turn a blind eye, snake-blood sake flows abundantly, and the nightlife runs nonstop.

But not every student is quite what they seem:

Ever is working toward becoming a doctor but nurses a secret passion for dance.

Rick Woo is the Yale-bound child prodigy bane of Ever’s existence whose perfection hides a secret.

Boy-crazy, fashion-obsessed Sophie Ha turns out to have more to her than meets the eye.

And under sexy Xavier Yeh’s shell is buried a shameful truth he’ll never admit.

When these students’ lives collide, it’s guaranteed to be a summer Ever will never forget.
